Electrical

Qualified electrician’s should always be used to carry out electrical installations. It is both illegal and dangerous to conduct any form of electrical work without suitable training and qualifications. Suitably qualified and licensed electricians have the equipment and knowledge needed to carry out electrical work safely. Additionally, it is important to note that Insurance companies may not cover damages resulting from work carried out by unlicensed individuals.

It is important to call a qualified electrician if there are signs of problems. This may range from issues such as damaged wiring, nuisance tripping of circuit breakers to more serious concerns such as shock from touching electrical appliances or lights dimming when turning electrical appliances on. Remember – Electricity can kill! Fatalities are often due to faulty or poor workmanship, resulting in electrical fires that may have been avoided if suitably qualified electricians were used.  Wiring must comply with building regulations and a qualified electrician will know what these are and ensure everything is compliant.

Smoke Alarms

Installation of smoke alarms -  New smoke alarm legislation commenced in Queensland from 1 January 2017.

New and substantially renovated homes are now required to have interconnected Australian Standard (AS) 3786-2014 photoelectric smoke alarms in all bedrooms, in hallways where bedrooms are connected, and on each and every level of the residence. This applies to homes where building applications were lodged after 1 January 2017.

Requirements for other homes will be phased in over 10 years. Interconnected AS 3786-2014 photoelectric smoke alarms will be required from:

·         1 January 2022 in all homes leased and sold

·         1 January 2027 in all other homes.

To comply with the new laws homeowners can install either hardwired 240V smoke alarms or non-removable 10-year battery smoke alarms. However, any existing hardwired 240V smoke alarm must be replaced with a hardwired 240V photoelectric smoke alarm. It is a legal requirement that the installation of hardwired 240V smoke alarms must be performed by a licenced electrician.

At Southern Cross Facilities Services we only utilise qualified and licensed plumbers. Appropriate qualifications ensure the job is done correctly the first time resulting in a permanent solution, rather than a quick fix.
